Pirate Halloween Costumes - Fun Costume Ideas For The Whole Family

By David Lawson

Children's pirate costumes are very popular at fancy dress parties with the main influence coming from films. It can be very easy to put a costume together for not very much money. A very simple method for a boys outfit would be to use the child's old trousers, cut them off just below the knee and make it with a jagged edge.

Cutting up old trousers gives it a very worn authentic look. Too this you could add a flowing white shirt or blouse, with a belt around your middle, you may choose to put a waistcoat on or not. You could also add a long fitted coat if you have one, a velvet one would be ideal. To finish the look, add bashed up old boots or pointy boots.

There are more options if you are female. You could either wear the trousers outfit or you could go for something more feminine such as a dress or skirt and top. Whichever you pick ensure the bottom of the skirt is jagged or a handkerchief hemline for an older effect and you could also get away with a boned top.

When using the face paints mix colours together to create a black or brown for smudges across the face. Make your hair look as messy as possible, maybe by back combing the hair to create the illusion of dreadlocks. To create the outfit from new buy black baggy trousers and cut off mid calf, cut into a jagged edge to age it.

For adult women a costume could consist of a jagged edge or a skirt cut on the bias, in shiny red fabric or black if you prefer the all black look. A bustier type top would go with this or a well fitting vest top. For accessories you could improvise and see if you could find a toy stuffed parrot to sit on your shoulder!

Whichever type of pirate costumes you decide to wear you could have lots of fun designing it and making it. Lots of fabric shops will happily help with choosing and measuring how much fabric you need if you want to make you own skirt or entire outfit. Go to town on dressing it all up with eye patches and parrots and enjoy yourself!
